Continue the Change Volunteer Fair TODAY

Looking to volunteer for the greater good in NYC, but don't know where to start? Then head to Brooklyn TODAY, Feb. 8, from 2:00-6:00 where more than 65 local nonprofits, charities, and advocacy groups will come together for the first-ever Continue the Change Service Fair.

The Service Fair is organized by Brooklyn for Barack and the Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats, and, as the press release describes, "the event will be part of an ongoing effort to harness the incredible energy sparked by the Obama campaign. Attendees will have an opportunity to speak with representatives of organizations that are offering concrete volunteer opportunities like writing, teaching, tutoring, filmmaking, phonebanking, mentoring, word processing, stocking food pantries, sewing clothes for survivors of domestic violence, working with animals, canvassing, gardening and farming, ushering at performances, photography, and job-search mentoring.

"There will also be a Make and Take arts table for kids and roundtable discussions on the following subjects: Local Environmental Activism, Using Technology to Monitor and Influence the Legislative Process, Health Care, Voting Rights, and Food Justice," continues the press release.

The event will be at Union Temple, 17 Eastern Parkway (at Grand Army Plaza), in the 3rd Floor ballroom. It is free to attend, but the organizers suggest a donation of a box of dried pasta for Union Temple's food drive.

To RSVP, please email continuethechange@gmail.com or call 718-757-8572.

This will be a rich, inspiring opportunity to start getting involved! Thanks to Brooklyn-based fiber artist, Jeanne Heifitz, for the head's up.

Friday Snacks! (The Obama Edition)

It's Friday -- enjoy the snacks!

COMMANDING
Obama's Inaugural Address was not only great to hear, it is also a beautiful work of statecraft -- the careful turnings of phrase, the artful suggestions. Here's the full text. (Pictured in my living room. Brian Braskie chair. Poster by Yee Haw Industries.)

SUBLIME
Speaking of literary craft, I was too cranked from Obama's speech to listen to Elizabeth Alexander's poem that followed. Finally read it tonight -- it's beautiful! Gave me goosebumps. What do you think, is it as good as Maya Angelou's poem for Clinton's inaugural, or Robert Frost's for JFK's? Here is the full text. Also, here's a Yale Daily News piece about the poet, the youngest ever to read at a presidential inauguration.

RIDICULOUS
Has Shepherd Fairey (designer of the ubiquitous blue-grey-red Obama iconography) gone around the bend? I mean, commemorative dinner plates? C'mon, man, get a grip! (Via Cool Hunting)

VICTORIOUS
Besides, if someone wants a commemorative Obama plate, isn't the Victory Plate the better choice, really? And only $19.95! (Treat yourself to the video that plays on the site for a minute -- who directs these things?)

IMPRESSIVE
All joking aside, Wired magazine speculates convincingly that the suit Obama wore on Inauguration Day was bulletproof. If indeed the fabric of the suit is woven with kevlar, that's some impressive example of fine craftsmanship! And that's no joke. (Via New York Magazine)

Volunteering on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Do you volunteer for your community on a regular basis?

I think volunteering is a great thing, but I sure do not, not measurably anyway.

Yet over the past several weeks, with Obama's frequent appeal to us to get involved with public service in order to help bring our country together and improve our communities, I am feeling more and more compelled to change this.

Today of course is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and while reading through some of his writings, I noticed this quote: "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'"

What indeed?

Despite the fact that tomorrow is the Inauguration and kinda a big deal, the Obama's have evidently taken up today for public service.

I know soup kitchens and food pantries are understocked and in need of hands to keep things going. I know there are plenty of places to find listings for volunteer opportunities. And yet I don't pitch in.

It's not for lack of positive role models. My Mom had a very well-developed sense of public service, and was always engaged in something charitable on top of her full-time job and being a Mom. From answering phones during the local public television station's pledge drive and canvassing for the politicians she supported, to organizing community crafts fairs and heading up my Girl Scout troop, public service was just part of my Mom's life.

I just don't feel like giving bags of unwanted clothes to the Salvation Army once a year compares.

(And I don't mean talking for free at events about my work -- that doesn't count. I mean, it's volunteering, but it's not really helping the less fortunate or cleaning up streets or anything).

So I am deciding today, in honor of Martin Luther King and President-elect Obama, to make a change. I am deciding to spend a few hours each month going outside of my comfort zone and pitching in for the greater good.

If you, like me, are not an avid volunteer already, I invite you to join me. Let's make a change and start pitching in, because it's all about being the change you want to see in the world.

Obamaware by Ayumi Horie

Hudson Valley potter Ayumi Horie has organized an auction of "Obamaware" that kicked off last night and ends on Wednesday. Proceeds go to the Obama/Biden campaign, and there are some awesome mugs, cups, and plates to bid on.

27 ceramic artists have contributed work including Alleghany Meadow's elegant bowls, Julia Galloway's Vote for Hope cup, and the organizer's own awesome mugs.

There are a LOT of items to select from, so browse and bid away!

Link to the Ebay auction here.

Learn about the ceramic artists here.

Read an essay about the project here written by Greenwich House Pottery director Sarah Archer.

This is a great way to both support ceramic arts and the Obama campaign. Great contribution to the cause, Ayumi!

P.S. Love Ayumi Horie's work? Check out her annual studio sale this weekend!

Imagine if Obama Met with President Bartlett

If you were a fan of "The West Wing" as I was, you remember President Bartlett, played by Martin Sheen. You probably also remember wishing he was the real President.

Well, Maureen Dowd yesterday posted an OpEd in the New York Times written by West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin that imagines a meeting between Senator Obama and President Bartlett that is a very entertaining and a somehow motivating way to start the work day.

And now, in the words of Bartlett, "Ok, breaks over."

Consumer Culture: Peeking Underneath Campaign Tee-Shirts

There's no use hiding the fact that I'm head-over-heels for Obama. I love what he says, I love how he says it, I love dreaming about the kind of administration he'd create. I LOVED the fist bump and totally believed it was unrehearsed. I could practically be the Obama Girl!

While I've got the Obama bug, but there's one thing I don't got: an Obama tee-shirt. (Is that like being patriotic but not wearing a flag pin?)

This occurred to me the other day, when a friend mentioned seeing a tee-shirt that says "Obama Says Knock You Out" and I immediately decided I needed one. (The slogan is a pop culture reference remixed in this You Tube video.)

But then I started wondering, where's it made? What would my dollars really be going toward? Wouldn't it be better to buy directly from the campaign, cast my dollar vote where it counts?

So I did some cruising around the 'net looking to see what other kind of wearable Obama propaganda is available out there. Obama's official campaign webstore offers some nice options, stylish cuts for women, clean graphics. But nothing too fun. Their cleverest design plays off the over-imitated "got milk?" campaign, but to me the phrase "got hope?" isn't that appealing at all, even if the price is cute ($20.08).

I suggest they do one that says "got change?" instead. It would more accurately echo the campaign's ubiquitous one-word slogan, AND would also be way more funny, as in the recent headline from The Onion: "Black Guy Asks Nation for Change." Hilarious! (I do love the Obama baby onesie, though, and there are some great Obama-themed prints donated by artists. But I digress.)

Though unexciting, I was very pleased to see that the official Obama shirts are all Union Made in the USA. You'd think that would be a foregone conclusion, not worth mentioning. Wouldn't a presidential candidate naturally make sure his or her merch is American made? Well, no. I remember a story from the last election where it turned out that some branded pullovers worn by the Bush people were made in China (which is probably where all those flag pins are made too.)

Anyway, according to the small print, it appears that 100% of your tee-shirt purchase price goes to the Obama campaign, and that's a good reason to buy it too. (Thought I don't get that really. Are they donated? If I bought, say, the ladies baseball jersey, what % of the $25 sale price would actually go toward the campaign? Certainly I'd hope the workers are getting decently paid for making them, that the cotton growers and dye-makers are getting paid, and so on. So how does that work?)

Also, it unfortunately appears that the shirts are made from conventionally-grown fibers, and in fact I don't even see an organic option. I'm disappointed about this. I mean, hello??? This is important!!! C'mon guys, you're supposed to be really involved in making eco-conscious choices!!! (Organic shirts are easy to find elsewhere, though, if you google it.)

Regardless, the Obama Says Knock You Out shirt is the one I really want, and it's not on the official site. Instead I found it's sold by Urban Outfitters, which to me is a careless corporate entity that co-opts the indie spirit and parodies art, fashion, and craft in pursuit of the bottom line. It has stockholders to please, after all.

And as if that weren't enough, it may be that buying an Obama tee-shirt from Urban Outfitters is also casting a dollar vote for some unsavory business practices and political affiliations if this article, this article, and this Wikipedia entry are true. (BTW, the company owns the chain Anthropologie and the label Free People, too.)

There's no way I'm supporting the questionable sourcing of something I don't even really need. That is SO being part of the problem.

So what's a conscientious Obama-loving girl to do if she wants to show her support and remind people to vote?

I guess just straight up donate to the Obama campaign and then embroider my own damn Obama slogan on a plain tee-shirt I already have...

... or maybe I'll volunteer or get the campaign to hire me to consult them on such matters!

'Cause Obama may have my vote on Election Day, but when it comes to dollar votes I'm still undecided.

OBAMA!!!

I've been fairly quiet about politics lately, but tonight I just need to express my over-the-moon excitedness that right now, as I write, Barak Obama is claiming the Democratic nomination for President of the United States!!! I am so happy I could cry!!!

And as Jae and I sit here listening to his heart-swelling speech and the crowd roar and cheer, we thought it might be fun to share with you the Obama Administration Dream Team we've been cooking up, half-seriously and half-tongue-in-cheek.

There are still positions open and others to add... Any suggestions?

And surely YOU have better/funner ideas than some of these... Do share!!

Imagine:

Vice President: Michael Bloomberg

Press Secretary: Brian Lehrer or Allison Janney

Secretary of State: Bill Richardson

Secretary of Defense: Colin Powell

Secretary of Energy: Dennis Kucinich

Sec. of the Interior: Bobby Kennedy, Jr.

Sec. of Agriculture: Alice Waters

Attorney General:

Sec. of Commerce:

Sec. of Labor: Michael Moore

Sec. of Education:

Sec. of Transportation: Someone who bikes to work

Sec. of Heath & Human Services: John Edwards

Sec. of Treasury:

Sec. of Veteran's Affairs: John McCain

Sec. of Housing & Urban Development:

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N.: Oprah Winfrey

U.S. Ambassador to France: Moi!

Supreme Court Justice (when one needs to be replaced): Hillary Clinton

FED Chairman:

White House Interior Designer:

White House Head Chef: there would be a reality TV show to determine this one

Michelle's Wardrobe: Carolina Herrera

Barak's Wardrobe: custom Paul Smith

What else...?

Well, I hope we get to see!!!! Remember to VOTE in November no matter what!!

Woo hoo!!!
